There will be three separate journal responses. I will provide the readings for each, you do not have to do the readings just skim and answer.

In your journals, identify the most important themes in the readings. Identify common themes, if any. Visit one of the African photo archives and select a photographer whose images reflect some of the themes in the readings. Say a few words about three or four of her or his photographs. Jonathan Reynolds, Sovereignty and Struggle, introduction, chapters 1, 3, 4, and 5.
Erin Haney, Photography and Africa, introduction, chapters 1 and 2 (partial).

Re-read Reynolds and Haney. In your journals, identify the themes that are most important for understanding how Africa was represented in visually during the period of the Cold War and decolonization. Remember the things that we talked about in the last class. Point out ways that your understanding has changed after re-reading the Reynolds and Haney. Also take note of the themes that the readings have in common, despite their differing subject matter.
Visit one of the African photo archives. Choose a photographer whose work catches your eye (not one that you chose earlier) and find out what you can about him or her, either on the website or online. Select five or more images by that photographer that reflect some of the themes in the readings. Say a few words about them in your journal. JOURNAL 3 USE THIRD OF PAGE
