Discussion Question
Healthcare policies impact all populations. Now, with the use of social media, policies involvement and awareness are rising.
Take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that are related to healthcare policy and are directly impacting your community or those you care for.
Give an overview of a policy or potential policy. Include how it could impact your community or those you care for positively negatively.
Next, discuss the importance that interdisciplinary collaboration would have related to the policy.
Then, identify any ethical concerns it raises for you and why.
Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class. Remember Twitter only allows 280 characters (this include spaces, etc.) so you will need to be concise. It should include a hashtag. Include a reference URL if applicable. Share this Tweet in the discussion. (Note: A Twitter account is not required).
Your discussion post should look like:
Paragraph one: overview of the policy or potential policy. Include how it could impact your community or those you care for positively negatively.
Paragraph two: Discuss the importance that interdisciplinary collaboration would have related to the policy.
Paragraph three: Identify any ethical concerns it raises for you and why
Paragraph four: Compose a Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class.
Paragraph five: Write a response to the following post:
“Tobacco use cessation in workplaces is a health care policy that have impacted healthcare as well as communities. In 2010, Wisconsin implemented it’s smoke free law and is now celebrating over 10 years of being smoke free in work places. This policy involved prohibiting or banning smoking in workplaces in order to reinforce the health of the people working in the companies or organizations. According to Centers for Disease control and Prevention , smoking restrictions and bans help in encouraging smokers to quit smoking and also reduce exposure of second hand smoke to non-smokers. Implementation of this policy has improved the health status of people in the community. Most of the people are not allowed to smoke in their workplaces or in enclosed buildings, therefore reducing the amount of cigarettes they smoke in a day, and others have opted quitting. This policy has encouraged healthy behaviors among most people, and prevented tobacco related diseases such as lung cancer (Syamlal, King & Mazurek, 2019).
Interdisciplinary collaboration involves working together of two or more health profession to assist patients in making their health decisions (Moe & Brataas, 2016). Nurses and behavioral therapists collaborate to raise awareness about the risks associated with smoking, and help users to quit smoking. The nurses help in assessment to determine any illness caused by smoking, and referring the patients for treatment of therapy as required (Nies & McEwen, 2019). The two professionals can also work together to raise awareness in the community and educate people on the benefits of living a smoke free life.
In relation to tobacco cessation in workplaces, some organizations have implemented wellness programs and other incentives to encourage individuals to be smoke free Other organizations may require candidates be nicotine free, thus only hiring those that are nicotine free. This policy may be ethically unacceptable because it denies smokers an equal chance for job opportunities (Syamlal, King & Mazurek, 2019). Also, some people are not smokers but may be exposed to second hand smoke, making them test positive for nicotine. This may raise issues on the criteria used to identify smokers and non-smokers in addition to the inequality issue.
