Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Knowing that you are taking a psychology course, one of your friends has just called you for some advice. Her six year-old son was just diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and she is wondering if she should have him take Ritalin (this drug is often prescribed for children with ADHD). His teacher says that he has a hard time sitting still in class, and he has a hard time concentrating. Your friend thinks that this is normal behavior for a six year-old boy, but she is worried about him.

For this week’s assignment, write a paper to your friend with your recommendation on whether or not the child should take Ritalin. Your paper will contain the following information:

1) An explanation of how the brain and central nervous system affects human behavior. You can use the information from Chapter 2, but be sure to paraphrase it (rewrite it in your own words) so that it will make more sense to your friend.

2) An explanation of how Ritalin affects children’s behavior. You will need to find this information on the Internet. Let your friend know how to get the information herself in case she wants to do more reading on her own.

3) Your recommendation as to whether or not a six-year old should take Ritalin for ADHD. Be sure to include your reasoning behind this decision.
