make a compelling case about the significance and relevance of your particular project through detailed descriiptions and creative choices. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box (while remaining within the realm of typical production logistics)
MUST ADDRESS THESE ELEMENTS
Overall Approach and Context: What made you choose this particular play to adapt? Describe your production concept as a whole and why you selected this approach. Do you plan to use the original text or create a new adaptation of the scriipt? Are you making any significant changes in terms of the characters (changing gender, age, etc.)? Give a brief synopsis of your adapted plot. When (time period) and where (geographically) are you going to set your play? What are the relevant historical circumstances that shape your choice in setting? How do these relate to the play? Relevant context includes political, social, and cultural events and movements that shape your concept of the production.
Production Location and Scale: What is the size of this production? Do you envision it as a large-scale commercial production (Broadway), in a regional theatre, touring production, etc.? What type of theatre space will your production be set in? Is it on a traditional proscenium stage, arena, or thrust stage, a site-specific piece performed outside in a forest, or an immersive theatre experience in an abandoned building? Explain why you chose this space. Why is the production best suited for the space you’ve chosen? How will the space affect the performance?
Creative Elements: Describe the overall aesthetic of how your play will look terms of the sets, costumes, lighting, and sound. Is it realistic, abstract, etc.? Give a clear picture of how the set looks- colors, fabrics, design, paintings on the walls, etc. What symbolism do these choices have? What emotions are they meant to convey? Do not just write, “It is set in a living room.” I want to know what that living room looks like- it is modern, dirty, crowded, and so on. Is the lighting particularly harsh, or is it softer and coming from lamps on the set? Will music be used in your adaptation, and if so, how? How do your choices illustrate your overall production concept?
Big Picture: Why this play, why now? Draw connections between the circumstances of the original production and the zeitgeist of our contemporary age that makes your production particularly impactful.
